BIG BAND BLAST 2026
Big Band Blast 2026
Big Band Blast is a vibrant festival created by musicians, for musicians.
Founded in 2013 by drummer and big band leader John Morrison, the event is co-directed by John and vocalist Jacki Cooper, supported by a dedicated team of volunteers. The festival is proudly partnered with the Mitchell Conservatorium in Bathurst and sponsored by Festivals Australia.
In 2026, Big Band Blast returns to Bathurst, taking place entirely at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre (BMEC) from May 15th to 17th.
As Australia’s premier big band festival, Big Band Blast welcomes high school, university, and community big bands of all levels.
The festival opens on Friday, May 15th, with a concert at BMEC featuring the CONnection Big Band and special guests, Mosaic Jazz Collective. Big Band Blast artists Jacki Cooper and Andrew Robertson will also join Mosaic on stage.
Saturday’s program includes workshops for all registered bands and performance sessions where ensembles can showcase their music in short sets and receive feedback from professional big band clinicians.
The Saturday night Gala Concert will highlight the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra, directed by David Theak, with guest appearances by Big Band Blast artists John Morrison, Eric Dunan, Rod Herbert, and Hannah James.
The festival concludes with a dynamic Sunday session, featuring a mini-festival format where each band performs a 20-minute set across four stages within BMEC.
Registration is $1650 per band, covering up to 20 participants, including teachers and support staff. Additional or individual registrations are available for $99.
Schools without a full big band can register individual students, who will be placed in special workshops designed for them.
Accommodation is arranged independently by each band, with a range of affordable options available in Bathurst.
